The first major heatwave of the year has hit southern Europe and is causing a number of restrictions and problems. Among other things, schools will remain closed and Athens' famous landmark, the Acropolis, will be closed during lunchtime.
Greece is not the only country suffering from the first extreme heatwave of the year, Turkey and Cyprus are also struggling with high temperatures of up to 45 degrees locally. The heat is also accompanied by the familiar problems of recent years: forest fires. In some cases, small local fires are already being fought. A large-scale fire has been reported in northern Cyprus.
According to the meteorological service, the heat wave will continue until Friday. Further restrictions on daily life are to be expected.
