Turkmenistan introduces e-visa

Turkmenistan is one of those countries where just organizing entry can be a bit of an experience. This will now change, at least to some extent. Since October 1, 2026, the country has had an official e-visa system.
Entry requirements remain strict, but the change is nonetheless notable. Previously, travelers had to obtain a pre-approved invitation, usually through a local travel agency or other partner in Turkmenistan. This step alone made the visa application process particularly time-consuming.
The new electronic visa aims to make entry significantly easier. According to migration rules, which were amended in 2025, an invitation is generally no longer required for an e-visa.
The application process is not yet as straightforward as with other e-visas. Details on which nationalities can apply for an e-visa, what documents are required, fees and processing time are still pending. An official platform at evisa.migration.gov.tm has already been set up. Issued e-visas can also be checked online.
Turkmenistan won't suddenly become an easy travel destination. The new e-visa will still offer travelers a noticeable improvement. The country remains isolated and bureaucratic, but at least the first hurdle on the road there may become somewhat less in the future.
