Passengers in the Lufthansa Group , which also includes the national carrier Austrian Airlines, can expect a significantly faster internet experience on board from 2026. The group has confirmed a new partnership with satellite provider Starlink. The aim is to equip all of the participating airlines' approximately 850 aircraft with a modern and particularly high-performance online connection.
The decision is seen as an important step towards expanding the premium positioning of the entire group. Thanks to the system's high bandwidth, streaming services, cloud applications and other data-intensive services will work without noticeable limitations, even during flights. This will, for the first time, make internet access on board almost as convenient as on the ground.
Another important detail concerns the cost. Status passengers and Travel ID users will be able to use the new service at no additional cost, regardless of travel class. As it stands now, this will make the Lufthansa Group the largest airline group in Europe to implement such technology on this scale.
The rollout is planned to begin in the second half of 2026. Thereafter, the upgrade will continue gradually until the entire fleet is converted in 2029. This collaboration is part of the Group's extensive investments in new aircraft as well as modern service and product standards.
According to the company's management, a stable internet connection plays a central role in the flight experience today. The new solution is designed to meet the growing demand and offer passengers greater comfort and flexibility. Further information on features and availability will be announced later this year.
