Great Britain introduces ETA

Great Britain introduces electronic travel authorization

The United Kingdom has announced that it will introduce a paid entry permit. This regulation will come into force for European citizens from April 2, 2025. From this date, uncomplicated entry will no longer be possible.

As of January 8, 2025, the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) will be mandatory for third countries without a visa requirement. Citizens of the European Union and Switzerland must also apply for an ETA from April 2, 2025, as the British government announced.

The ETA will cost around 10 British pounds, which is about 12 euros or 11 Swiss francs. The application is made online and the permit is valid for two years. During this period, multiple entries are possible, with a maximum stay in the UK of six months. A valid passport will also be required for entry, as an identity card will no longer be accepted.

This regulation comes as no surprise, as the European Union will also introduce electronic entry authorization for visa-free countries from 2025, which will also affect British citizens.
